UPDATE: In a dramatic showdown, local faith leaders were again denied access to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facility in Broadview, Illinois, this morning. The gathering, which featured a somber All Saints Day Mass, quickly escalated into a spirited protest with clashes reported between activists and law enforcement.
The event kicked off at 10 a.m. on November 1, 2025, when a coalition led by notable activist Sister JoAnn Persch sought to enter the facility to provide spiritual support and Communion to detainees. However, their request was swiftly rejected by federal immigration agents, escalating tensions outside the facility located at 1930 Beach St..
According to Sarah Rand, spokesperson for the Coalition for Spiritual and Public Leadership, Illinois State troopers contacted federal agents, who denied their entry request. This has marked the second failed attempt by the coalition, which has been advocating for pastoral care access that was once allowed for nearly two decades. “Unfortunately we were denied entrance,” said the Rev. Juan Vargas, associate pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish. “But we still had our moment of spiritual communion.”
Despite the setback, over 2,000 people attended the Mass, and approximately 800 received the Eucharist. The service included liturgical dancers and blessings for those impacted by federal immigration raids under Operation Midway Blitz.
Tensions erupted following the Mass, as protesters donned Halloween costumes and staged a “costume party” protest. Many carried signs proclaiming, “ICE out of Chicago,” and set up ofrendas for Día de Los Muertos, honoring individuals who have died during immigration struggles.
Throughout the day, law enforcement attempted to maintain order, with state police employing pepper balls to disperse crowds. Protesters engaged in what they termed a “Jericho walk,” symbolizing protest against the operations of ICE, as they sought to disrupt the facility’s activities.
The situation escalated when police arrested four individuals for disorderly conduct. Eyewitness accounts detailed a chaotic scene as officers confronted demonstrators, resulting in physical altercations. “Every minute we can disrupt the operations of this facility is a minute spent protecting our neighbors,” stated organizer Rachel Cohen.
Local authorities have restricted protest activities to designated areas, but activists remain undeterred. The coalition has expressed frustration over the lack of communication from ICE regarding their entry requests, emphasizing the need for transparency and compassion for detainees. “What about the safety of the people who are there? They’re human as well,” Vargas stressed.
As the day concluded, tensions remained high, and police instructed protesters to disperse or face potential arrest. The clashes and emotional testimonies from attendees have drawn significant attention to ongoing issues surrounding immigration and the treatment of detainees.
As the situation develops, the coalition continues to seek entry into the facility, urging community support and awareness. The protests reflect a growing movement advocating for humane treatment and transparency in immigration processes.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as activists vow to continue their fight for justice and access to those detained.
