Fargo Launches Urgent Snow Removal; Cars Face Impoundment

URGENT UPDATE: Fargo officials announce that snow removal operations will commence downtown late Sunday night, December 14, bringing immediate parking challenges for residents. The city warns that vehicles parked in snow removal zones may be impounded as crews tackle the buildup caused by recent snowfall.

Starting Sunday night, the city will clear snow along east-west avenues, with operations extending into early Monday morning. This move aims to alleviate the severe parking difficulties downtown, where drivers like Charley Setterlund, an NDSU student, have expressed frustration over navigating tight spots and snowbanks. “Looking for a spot to parallel park is a real challenge right now,” Setterlund remarked, highlighting the anxiety of parking amid ongoing traffic.

Corey Houim, Public Works Services Manager, emphasized the importance of public safety during this operation. “Please stay back and give us all the room we can,” he urged pedestrians, noting the loud equipment and maneuvering required for effective snow removal.

The city’s decision to begin work on December 14 was influenced by unpredictable weather forecasts that hinted at potential snow. Houim explained, “We wanted to ensure safety, so we scheduled the contracted trucks to begin operations Sunday night, continuing through Monday morning.” Following this, streets will also be addressed Monday night into Tuesday morning.

While this schedule allows residents to prepare, some like Setterlund believe the timing could pose issues for weekend activities. “These streets get a lot of traffic,” he noted, especially as people enjoy holiday lights.

Drivers are reminded that parking will still be allowed on north and south facing streets during this first phase of snow removal. The city urges residents to cooperate with the snow removal process to ensure a smoother and safer experience for all.
