URGENT UPDATE: The Fitchburg Art Museum has officially reopened its doors, inviting visitors to celebrate its centennial with a series of captivating exhibitions and events. After a brief closure, the museum is ready to showcase its latest offerings, including the stunning photography of Tara Sellios, which is now on display through May 24, 2024.
Sellios, a Boston-based artist, presents her exhibition, “Ask Now the Beasts,” featuring monumental photographs that highlight the beauty of the grotesque. Using a large format 8 x 10 camera, she captures intricate still life compositions made from organic materials such as animal bones and dried flowers. This exhibition draws inspiration from historical art forms, including Christian illuminated manuscripts and Dutch vanitas paintings, inviting viewers to explore themes of life, death, and the cyclical nature of existence.
In addition, the museum is thrilled to present “FESTIVAL: A Celebration of African Art,” the first of a series of exhibitions honoring FAM’s centennial. This collection spans from the first millennium CE to contemporary works, showcasing diverse cultures and contexts from across the African continent. Visitors can expect to engage with universal themes such as power, love, and celebration, all while experiencing the vibrancy of African artistic traditions.
Join us tonight for the grand kickoff of the Centennial Celebrations from 5:30 PM to 8:00 PM. The event will feature a 100th Anniversary Toast, a special appearance by FAM founder Eleanor Norcross, portrayed by actress Sally Cragin, and a preview of the upcoming Centennial Exhibition. Attendees will enjoy drinks and appetizers provided by Finicky Fork throughout the evening.
While event sign-up is encouraged for planning purposes, it is not required to attend. This event is free and open to the public, and all are welcome to join in the celebration.
