Franklin G. Schappell, 91, Passes Away; Services Set for December 16

UPDATE: Franklin G. Schappell, a beloved community member from Perry Twp., has passed away at the age of 91. Schappell died on December 19, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of family, faith, and dedication to his community.

Schappell, who was the husband of the late Ruth G. (Reppert) Schappell, who predeceased him on July 31, 2019, was known for his contributions to both his family and local church. Born in Perry Twp., he was the son of the late James and Edna (Sunday) Schappell and graduated from Perry High School in 1952. A proud veteran of the U.S. Army, he dedicated many years to the community, including work at Berks Packing, where he operated a chopper and helped produce Berks Hot Dogs until his retirement in 1996.

Schappell was a faithful member of Zion’s Church in Perry Twp., where he actively participated in maintaining the church cemetery. His passion for the outdoors was evident through his love for hunting, farming, and gardening, while his dedication to reading the Bible reflected his deep faith.

He leaves behind three sons: Rodney F. Schappell of Cumru Twp., Dennis J. Schappell (husband of Lisa (Simmons)) of Centre Twp., and Gregory C. Schappell (husband of Tulsa (Hosmer)) of Shoemakersville. Additionally, he is survived by three daughters: Denise E. Schappell of Perry Twp., Brenda R. (Schappell) Zellers of Hamburg, and Patti E. (Schappell) Cahill (wife of Dale Cahill) from Geneva, OH. Schappell’s family also includes 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren, reflecting the enduring impact he had on their lives.

The family will hold funeral services on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Zion’s Church, located at 770 Zion Church Road, Hamburg, PA 19526. A viewing will precede the service from 10:00 to 11:00 AM. Following the service, Schappell will be laid to rest at Zion’s Cemetery in Perry Twp.
