Inaugural Monster Mash Beaver Bash Draws 300+ Trick-or-Treaters

BEMIDJI, MN — The inaugural Monster Mash Beaver Bash at Bemidji State University is a resounding success, drawing over 300 trick-or-treaters on the evening of October 31, 2023. Hosted at the John Glas Fieldhouse, the event replaced the traditional trick-or-treating at residence halls, providing a centralized location for families to enjoy Halloween festivities.

Jonathan Dietz, director of housing and residential life at BSU, confirmed that the event aimed to enhance accessibility for parents and young children, especially in the chilly weather. “The energy level has been really high,” Dietz stated, noting that attendees began lining up 15 to 30 minutes early to participate. “With the large traffic we’ve seen already, I’d say this has been a large success.”

Parents and children found refuge from the rain as they engaged in various activities set up by around a dozen student organizations. These included games like pumpkin tic-tac-toe, giant Jenga, and bowling, along with an abundance of candy. Student volunteers, including resident assistants Shelby Thyssen and Emma Ostrowski, reported greeting more than 300 kids within the first half-hour at just one entrance.

Dietz highlighted the event’s success due to the remarkable involvement of residential students, with an impressive 90% of volunteers being non-staff members. “We’ve got students from a lot of different clubs and organizations,” he said, mentioning groups such as the Communications Honor Society and the Wildlife Society.

The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as attendees, many in creative costumes, had their pictures taken with Bucky the Beaver. “It’s so fun to see our student community come out and engage,” Dietz added. “The connections made here are invaluable.”

As the event continues to unfold, the buzz around the Monster Mash Beaver Bash is palpable, making it a new tradition for the community. Families are encouraged to join in the fun as the night progresses, ensuring that this Halloween celebration becomes a staple at Bemidji State University for years to come.

Stay tuned for more updates on this festive evening, as the Monster Mash Beaver Bash proves to be a hit among students and families alike.
