UPDATE: A groundbreaking boxing event held last week in London showcased the unity of young Jewish and Muslim boxers from Israel, challenging the narrative that “Zionism is racism.” The “Gloves and Doves” event at the JW3 cultural centre featured a diverse Israeli team of two Muslims and four Jews, competing against British boxers to promote peace and camaraderie.
The event, which took place on July 10, 2023, was not just a sports competition but a powerful statement. Israeli flags adorned the venue, and messages of “fight for peace” were emblazoned in English, Arabic, and Hebrew. Boxer and founder of Gloves and Doves, Tony Milch, emphasized the initiative’s goal, stating, “We are here for peace, we are here for unity.”
This marks the second trip for Israeli boxers to the UK, following last year’s event in Camden. The initiative aims to bridge cultural gaps and showcase Israel’s multicultural society. Milch noted that many attendees were unaware of the Arab presence in Israel, saying, “If we can change one mind at a time, we’ll have accomplished what we set out to do.”
The live-streamed event was sanctioned by the World Boxing Council (WBC), underscoring its significance in the boxing community. Milch described boxing as a transformative sport that fosters respect and connection between competitors, regardless of their backgrounds.
The event featured special guest Alireza Ghadiri, an undefeated professional boxer of Iranian descent, who awarded the Alexander Mashkevitch Award to Mahmoud Majid, a 13-year-old Arab Israeli boxer recognized for his outstanding performance. Majid, from the village of Makr, was the youngest participant, showcasing the potential of young athletes in breaking down barriers.
British boxer Charles Whitewood, who has over 15 years of experience, expressed the camaraderie built through competition, stating, “We traded punches instead of words, which brought us closer than words ever could.” He praised his Israeli opponent’s sportsmanship, describing him as a “proper gent.”
The atmosphere of the evening was infused with positivity, as Whitewood highlighted the unique bond formed in the ring. “There’s a lot of love in boxing, and it was felt that night. We were brothers,” he said, reflecting the event’s core mission of promoting unity.
The Gloves and Doves initiative is gaining traction and can be followed on their Instagram page. This event not only showcased athletic talent but also served as a vital platform for dialogue and understanding among diverse communities.
As the world continues to grapple with divisions, the powerful message from this boxing event resonates now more than ever: peace is worth fighting for.
