Jingle Bell Dash in Kingston Raises $10,000 for LGBTQ+ Youth

URGENT UPDATE: The Jingle Bell Dash in Kingston, N.Y., just concluded, raising an impressive $10,000 for the Hudson Valley LGBTQ+ Community Center’s youth outreach programs. Around 40 enthusiastic runners, clad in festive outfits, took to the streets this morning, braving the cold temperatures to support a vital cause.

The run kicked off at 9:00 AM on North Front Street, winding through the historic Stockade District. Some participants bundled up for warmth, while others opted for more daring attire, embodying the event’s playful spirit. Pre-run espresso martinis at Hotel Kinsley helped fuel the participants and keep the holiday cheer alive.

This year’s event, which took place on December 16, 2023, marked the second annual Jingle Bell Dash, inspired by similar races like Albany’s Santa Speedo Sprint. Co-director of Big Gay Hudson Valley, Stephan Hengst, expressed excitement over the doubled turnout compared to last year.

“It’s fun, it’s goofy. It’s great visibility for the queer community,” Hengst said, highlighting the event’s blend of celebration and advocacy. He added, “We’re aiming for 100 participants next year to further amplify our efforts.”

Funds raised specifically support the center’s “Gen Q” youth programs, which are critical for LGBTQ+ young people in the area. Executive Director Richard Heyl de Ortiz emphasized the importance of these outreach services: “We’re always here when a young person comes in, just to talk to someone. We also do school outreach to support staff in helping LGBTQ+ students.”

The Jingle Bell Dash not only fosters community spirit but also provides a safe space for LGBTQ+ youth to connect and share experiences. The center’s ongoing initiatives, including a “Gen Z Drop-in” event, offer essential support and friendship opportunities for participants.

Hengst is optimistic about the future of the Jingle Bell Dash, stating, “Everyone participating today helped raise funds to keep these programs going and to grow these programs.”

As the event wraps up, the community looks ahead with hope and eagerness for the next year’s gathering. For more details on the Jingle Bell Dash and LGBTQ+ services available in the Hudson Valley, visit lgbtqcenter.org or biggayhudsonvalley.com.
