Jury Deliberates Fate of Activist Zoe Rosenberg in Poultry Raid

UPDATE: A Sonoma County jury is currently deliberating the fate of Zoe Rosenberg, a 23-year-old animal rights activist accused of trespassing and taking four chickens from Petaluma Poultry during a series of incursions two years ago. The jury began its discussions on Tuesday after closing arguments in a trial that has captured national attention.

The case revolves around accusations that Rosenberg, affiliated with the organization Direct Action Everywhere (DxE), acted out of a desire for publicity rather than a genuine concern for animal welfare. Prosecutors argued that her actions were part of a planned publicity stunt, coinciding with DxE’s yearly Animal Liberation Conference in June 2023.

Deputy District Attorney Matthew Hobson emphasized that there was no substantial evidence to support Rosenberg’s claims that the chickens were suffering, stating, “There was no neutral party in this process. None.” He pointed out that the timing of her actions suggested a clear intent to capture media attention.

In stark contrast, Rosenberg’s defense attorney Chris Carraway argued that her motivations were rooted in compassion for the animals. “This is about Zoe Rosenberg’s sincere belief birds were suffering at a slaughterhouse,” Carraway told jurors, underscoring the emotional stakes involved.

Rosenberg faces a serious charge of felony conspiracy along with three misdemeanors linked to multiple trespassing incidents at the facility between April and June 2023. If convicted, she could face a sentence ranging from probation to a maximum of five years in prison.

This case follows the recent sentencing of DxE co-founder Wayne Hsiung, who received 90 days in jail and two years’ probation for a similar incident. Rosenberg was arrested just outside the courthouse in November 2023 after the sentencing.

The implications of the jury’s decision could resonate deeply within Sonoma County, where DxE has ramped up protests against meat producers. The organization is known for its aggressive tactics, including demonstrations and picketing at stores like Trader Joe’s that sell Petaluma Poultry products.

As deliberations continue, the outcome will likely have significant ramifications for animal rights activism in the region. Observers are keenly watching how this trial will impact future protests and policies surrounding animal welfare.

Stay tuned for the verdict, which is expected to shape the landscape of animal rights activism in the Bay Area and beyond.
