Kevin Durant Urges Houston Rockets Amid 0-2 Start Frustration
UPDATE: The Houston Rockets’ promising start has turned into frustration as they fall to 0-2 after a 115-111 loss to the Detroit Pistons on October 27, 2023. Star forward Kevin Durant expressed that both players and coaches are “pissed off” about the team’s performance, but he views this early-season anger as a positive sign.
“We want a better outcome, and it’s early, too,” Durant stated. “So for us to feel that way, I like that kind of energy.” Despite his impressive personal performance, scoring 37 points on 9-of-18 shooting and hitting 16 of 18 free throws, it wasn’t enough to secure the Rockets’ first victory.
The game was played in front of Houston legends Yao Ming and Hakeem Olajuwon, who witnessed a tense finish. The Rockets, who were the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference last season, are now grappling with significant expectations after entering this year with 14-1 odds to win the NBA title, according to ESPN BET.
Guard Amen Thompson highlighted the team’s desire for improvement, stating, “Just feel like we haven’t played a good game yet. We want to play great games. We have championship-level expectations.” The Rockets have lost two close matches, including a 125-124 double-overtime defeat against the defending champion Oklahoma City Thunder in their season opener.
As the fourth quarter wound down, the Rockets trailed by just two points. Durant attempted to lead his team to victory but was met with tough defense. After a pick-and-roll play, he passed to Alperen Şengün, whose shot was blocked by Detroit’s Paul Reed, sealing the game. Pistons guard Cade Cunningham then secured the win with two clutch free throws.
Durant acknowledged the challenge of finding the right balance between dominating the game and facilitating for teammates. “I got aggressive and made them double me, and I think we got some good looks,” he said. Through two games, Durant is averaging 30 points on 53% shooting, with a stellar 43% from beyond the arc.
The Rockets are looking to turn their fortunes around quickly, with their next game on the horizon. Fans are eager to see if Durant can lead the team to its first win and shake off the early-season disappointment. Stay tuned for updates as the Rockets strive to meet the high expectations set for this season.
