Kyle Mayoral Runoff Set for December 13; Key Votes Tallied

UPDATE: The City of Kyle, Texas is bracing for a crucial runoff election on December 13, 2023, after no candidate secured a majority in the mayoral race. Former City Council members Robert Rizo and Yvonne Flores-Cale have emerged as the frontrunners, with Rizo capturing approximately 42 percent of the vote and Flores-Cale at 32 percent, according to CBS Austin.

This intense runoff is set against the backdrop of a crowded field, where the lack of a clear winner has ramped up stakes for both candidates. Rizo leads with 2,303 votes, while Flores-Cale follows with 1,746 votes. Other candidates, Donny Wills and Andrea Villescaz, trail behind with 907 and 493 votes, respectively.

In the City Council District 1 race, Bear Heiser and Courtney Goza will also face off in a runoff election after Heiser garnered 2,061 votes to Goza’s 1,404 votes. This runoff is critical, as the City Council District 1 seat remains undecided.

In other election results from November 4, Claudia Zapata and Melisa Medina won seats in City Council Districts 3 and 2, respectively, with Zapata achieving a convincing win of 3,246 votes against her opponent, Miguel A. Zuniga, who received 1,949 votes.

Voter engagement was high, as residents approved 16 out of 17 proposed charter amendments, reflecting a strong desire for change in local governance.

Looking ahead, early voting for the runoff election will take place from December 1 to December 5, with additional opportunities on December 8 and 9. A special Saturday session is scheduled for December 6 to accommodate voters unable to participate during the weekdays. The final details will be confirmed at the November 18 City Council meeting.

On election day, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., giving voters ample opportunity to make their voices heard in this pivotal election. As the community prepares for the runoff, all eyes will be on Kyle as residents decide their next mayor and key city council representatives.
