UPDATE: The Library Foundation SD has officially opened its new bookstore in Mission Hills today, marking a significant addition to the community and a revival of independent bookstores. The shop, located at the corner of West Washington and Hawk streets, occupies the former Mission Hills Public Library space.
This independent bookstore is dedicated to promoting local and LGBTQ+ authors, with a curated selection of new books and unique gifts for book enthusiasts. “The Library Shop is excited to join the Mission Hills business community. We are proud to be part of the resurgence of independent bookstores in San Diego and around the U.S.,” said Patrick Stewart, CEO of Library Foundation SD.
The opening comes as a refreshing development for the neighborhood, which lost its library when it relocated less than a mile away to Washington and Front streets. The new bookstore aims to revive the community spirit and support local literature, with proceeds directly benefiting all 37 library locations in San Diego.
Local leaders are thrilled about this transformation. “Turning the former Mission Hills Library into a bookshop and community gathering space is a win for this neighborhood,” stated San Diego City Councilman Stephen Whitburn. “I’m grateful to the Library Foundation SD, the city’s Library Department, and the residents who have breathed new life into this community space.”
The Mission Hills Library Shop will feature displays highlighting new arrivals, staff recommendations, and works from local and LGBTQ+ authors, reflecting its proximity to the historic Hillcrest area. Additionally, it will include a selection of banned books, reinforcing the foundation’s commitment to fighting censorship in literature.
The location will also serve as a communal venue for author events and speaking tours, further engaging the community in literary discussions and activities. As the Library Foundation SD states, their mission is to strengthen communities through philanthropy and advocacy for the San Diego Public Library system.
The opening of this bookstore is not just about books; it symbolizes a renewed commitment to community engagement and local culture. For residents and visitors alike, the new Library Shop in Mission Hills serves as a beacon of creativity and connection in the heart of San Diego.
With the excitement surrounding this launch, locals are encouraged to visit and support their new neighborhood bookstore, ensuring that the love for literature and community continues to thrive.
