URGENT UPDATE: Hazleton City is set to celebrate the holiday season in a special way. Local nonagenarian Clemie Yamona, who turns 96 years old this Saturday, will light the official Christmas tree on the front steps of Hazleton City Hall today, December 6, 2023, at 4:30 PM.
Yamona, a trailblazer in her community, made history as the first female class president of Hazleton High School in 1945 and served as the city’s first female council member from 1972 to 1976. Her contributions to the community are profound; she is also the founder of the American Cancer Society’s Greater Hazleton Unit Telethon, showcasing her commitment to local health initiatives.
The lighting ceremony will not only mark the start of the festive season but will also honor Yamona’s legacy as a dedicated public servant and community leader. She recently served as the Honorary Chair for the 47th Annual Telethon, held on November 15, emphasizing her ongoing engagement with charitable causes.
Residents are encouraged to gather at City Hall to witness this heartwarming event, celebrating not just the holiday spirit, but also a remarkable woman who has dedicated her life to serving Hazleton. As the community comes together to support Yamona, this event is a reminder of the importance of local heroes and their impact on society.
