UPDATE: Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro claimed on Wednesday that his country possesses 5,000 Russian-made Igla-S anti-aircraft missiles, strategically positioned across Venezuela. This announcement comes amid escalating tensions as US President Donald Trump hinted at potential military action against the Maduro regime as part of a broader counter-drug trafficking initiative.

Maduro stated during a live military event that the Igla-S, which are lightweight, short-range systems comparable to American Stingers, are capable of targeting small aerial threats such as cruise missiles and drones. “Any military force in the world knows the power of the Igla-S and Venezuela has no less than 5,000,” he asserted, emphasizing their deployment in every region of the country.

The United States is currently reinforcing its military presence in the Caribbean with the deployment of 4,500 Marines and sailors, aiming to bolster operations against drug cartels. Recently, US forces have executed several strikes on vessels suspected of narcotics trafficking, raising legal questions among US lawmakers regarding the operations against these so-called “narco boats.”

Trump, speaking last week, confirmed that he has authorized the CIA to engage in covert operations in Venezuela and hinted at expanding military efforts. “We are certainly looking at land now, because we’ve got the sea very well under control,” he stated, indicating a shift in strategy that could escalate tensions further.

The Trump administration has been preparing for potential military intervention for months, linking Maduro to drug trafficking organizations deemed terror groups that pose a significant threat to US security. However, it remains unclear if a direct military strike will occur, as the main objective appears to be pressuring Maduro to relinquish power voluntarily.

In response to the growing US presence, Maduro has mobilized troops and claimed to have over 8 million militia members ready to defend the nation. “The people of Venezuela are clear, united, and aware,” he proclaimed during a televised address, asserting their readiness to counter what he describes as an open conspiracy against national peace and stability.

According to Rosoboronexport, the Russian state company responsible for exporting Igla-S systems, these missiles can reach targets at a maximum altitude of 3,500 meters and a range of up to 6,000 meters. While the exact number of missiles in Venezuela has not been independently verified, their presence is acknowledged in military assessments conducted by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS).

As the situation unfolds, all eyes are on the Caribbean and Venezuela, where the balance of power is increasingly precarious. Both Maduro’s government and US officials are poised for potential confrontation. The coming days will be critical in determining the future of Venezuela and its ongoing struggle against external pressures.

This developing story will be updated as more information becomes available.
