URGENT UPDATE: A 46-year-old man has been charged with first- and second-degree murder following the shocking discovery of a woman’s body in a Howard, South Dakota home early Saturday morning. Elias Stubbe is accused of killing 56-year-old Nichole Malfero at approximately 2:50 a.m. on August 26, 2023.
Authorities responded to a call at the residence, where Malfero was pronounced dead shortly after their arrival. An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday to determine the cause of death.
Attorney General Marty Jackley stated, “The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is working with local authorities to process evidence and conduct interviews.” He assured the community that there is no ongoing threat to public safety.
Stubbe is currently being held on a substantial $1 million cash bond at the Davison County Jail in Mitchell. Under U.S. law, he is presumed innocent until proven guilty. In addition to the murder charges, Stubbe faces first- and second-degree burglary charges related to an unrelated incident in Miner County earlier this summer.
The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are expected to release more information as it becomes available. This tragic event has left the Howard community in shock, highlighting the urgent need for safety measures and support for those affected by violence.
As the story develops, residents are urged to stay informed and report any suspicious activity to local law enforcement. More updates will follow as details emerge from this troubling case.
