URGENT UPDATE: A man tragically drowned while fishing at Bean Hollow State Beach in San Mateo County on Wednesday, November 29, officials confirmed. This incident marks the fourth drowning off the California coast in recent weeks, raising alarms about safety in the area.
Authorities report that emergency crews received calls around 3 p.m. regarding a person in distress in the water. According to the Cal Fire San Mateo-Santa Cruz Unit, the victim was fishing with his wife when he suddenly vanished. The woman had briefly left to retrieve something from their car, and upon her return, her husband was gone.
A bystander quickly spotted the man, and firefighters promptly pulled him from the water. Despite immediate CPR efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene. The victim’s identity has not yet been disclosed.
This incident comes on the heels of other recent tragedies. On November 22, Amanpreet Thind, a 35-year-old U.S. Army specialist from New Jersey, was swept into the ocean at Soberanes Point in Garrapata State Park. Just a week prior, Yuji Hu, 39, from Calgary, Alberta, and his 7-year-old daughter tragically lost their lives in rough waters off Garrapata State Beach.
In response to these events, the National Weather Service issued a “beach hazards” warning for the San Mateo area, predicting breaking waves of 10 to 14 feet. Officials are urging beachgoers to exercise extreme caution due to the dangerous surf conditions.
As this story develops, authorities continue to emphasize the importance of water safety during these hazardous conditions. Families and individuals planning to visit the coast are advised to stay informed and adhere to safety warnings to prevent further tragedies.
