Neddy Latimer Honored as Leominster Shelter’s Namesake
UPDATE: On October 16, 2023, the new shelter in Leominster was officially named the Neddy Latimer House, honoring the longtime Executive Director of the Spanish American Center, Neddy Latimer. The event celebrated her decades of dedication to the community and the critical support she has provided to those in need.
The mood was electric as community members gathered to honor Latimer, who has been a beacon of hope for countless families. Doug Bushman, Executive Director of the Fitchburg Housing Authority and CEO of Opportunities for Hope, revealed the shelter’s name, stating, “This is not just a building. It is a beacon of hope.” He emphasized Latimer’s unwavering passion for helping others, regardless of their circumstances.
Bushman highlighted the collaborative efforts that went into establishing the shelter, pointing out that over $3 million was invested to ensure it met safety codes and provided a welcoming environment. He expressed gratitude to the Spanish American Center, United Way, and Opportunities for Hope for their roles in launching this essential project.
During the ceremony, Mayor Dean Mazzarella praised Latimer’s commitment, saying, “Neddy is really the story of us.” He acknowledged her nearly four-decade-long service to the community and encouraged attendees to carry forward her legacy of compassion.
The shelter, which opened its doors as a safe haven for families and individuals, marks a significant step in addressing local housing challenges. Kory Eng, President and CEO of the United Way of North Central Massachusetts, commended Latimer for always being ahead of the curve, stating, “This program is about people regaining their dignity…that’s what Neddy represents.”
Attendees, including Latimer’s husband, Jose Latimer, expressed immense pride and gratitude during the heartfelt ceremony. As Neddy Latimer addressed the crowd, she was met with a standing ovation. “I am humbled and honored,” she said, promising that the shelter would embody hope and service.
The event concluded with a toast to Latimer and the community’s efforts, symbolizing a collective commitment to support the vulnerable. Father Julio Granados offered a benediction, reminding everyone of the goodness that lies within and the importance of rekindling hope.
This new chapter for the Neddy Latimer House is more than just the dedication of a building; it represents the community’s commitment to uplift those in need, ensuring that every individual who seeks help is greeted with compassion and respect.
