The Oakland Police Department (OPD) is investigating the death of a suspect who suffered a medical emergency during an arrest related to a home break-in.
The distressing incident unfolded just after 4:15 a.m. in the 11000 block of Ettrick Street. Upon arrival, officers located the individual inside a residence. According to OPD, a brief struggle ensued while attempting to detain the suspect, who later became unresponsive.
Emergency medical personnel quickly transported the suspect to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The circumstances surrounding the death have sparked a comprehensive investigation by multiple agencies, including the OPD Homicide unit, the Internal Affairs Bureau, the Oakland City Police Commission, the Community Police Review Agency, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office.
In an official statement, OPD confirmed the decision to place the involved officer(s) on leave in accordance with department policy. The case is still under investigation, and authorities are expected to release further information as it becomes available.
