UPDATE: A routine patrol turned into an extraordinary emergency as Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper Tyler Shelby delivered a baby on the shoulder of a highway just moments before an ambulance arrived. The dramatic incident unfolded on November 22, 2025, in southwest Oklahoma, showcasing the trooper’s quick response and readiness in a high-pressure situation.
Trooper Shelby was initially dispatched to assist with traffic control for an approaching ambulance when he received a call about a woman in active labor. Arriving on the scene within minutes, Shelby encountered a black Chevrolet Camaro parked on the shoulder, with the passenger door wide open and an expectant mother preparing for delivery.
As he approached, Shelby’s primary intention was to reassure the woman that help was on the way. However, the situation escalated rapidly. “The baby is coming!” the woman exclaimed, prompting a swift reaction from Shelby. “Well, don’t push!” he cautioned, but it was too late. Within seconds, he found himself in a position he never anticipated that morning—assisting in the delivery of her newborn.
The Oklahoma Highway Patrol confirmed that the baby arrived just moments later, with Shelby later humorously downplaying the event, saying, “All I did was play catch.” The ambulance arrived shortly thereafter, transporting both the mother and her newborn son, named Finley, to a local hospital for further care.
In a statement, the OHP expressed their relief, stating, “We’re happy to report that both mother and baby are doing great!” After ensuring the safety of the mother and child, Trooper Shelby returned to his patrol duties, ready for the next call.
Officials noted that while unusual roadside deliveries are rare, they do happen. Earlier this year, a couple in Michigan welcomed their child in a McDonald’s parking lot during a frantic rush to the hospital. The OHP also highlighted that their troopers receive medical training that includes the basics of childbirth, although they hope to rarely encounter such situations.
“Trooper Shelby was prepared for this moment, demonstrating the vital role our officers play in their communities,” the OHP added. “To the family, we are thrilled for you and grateful that Trooper Shelby could be there in your moment of need! Congratulations on your new arrival!”
This heartwarming story not only showcases the dedication of law enforcement but also highlights the unexpected challenges they can face while on duty. As we celebrate the miracle of new life, it reminds us of the extraordinary moments that can unfold in the most ordinary of circumstances.
