UPDATE: Paul Lubno, the winningest driver in Langley Speedway history, has just clinched his 8th Grand Stock championship as he gears up to celebrate his 60th birthday on December 17. This achievement comes just one race after Greg Edwards secured his record 8th Late Model Division title on Saturday, solidifying the significance of veteran racers in the sport.
In a thrilling showdown at the historic Langley Speedway in Hampton, Virginia, Lubno’s triumph marks him as a dominant force in the racing community. With a remarkable 137 victories under his belt, he trails only the late Shawn Balluzzo, who boasts 11 titles across his celebrated career.
“We go there to race, be competitive and win,” Lubno stated. “If points championships work out for us, that’s great.” At age 60, Lubno continues to defy the odds, demonstrating that passion and teamwork can lead to outstanding results.
Lubno’s racing career spans over four decades. His journey began in 1983 when he first stepped onto the track with dreams of glory, despite an initial setback that saw him disqualified for a weight violation in his rookie season. “I was ecstatic,” he recalled of his first legitimate win the following year. “We just kept at it and here we are.”
This season, Lubno has already claimed six wins, showing that age has not diminished his competitive spirit. His success can be attributed to a solid crew, including his brother-in-law Glen Green, who has been a key part of his racing team for decades. “I’m lucky to have a good crew with good chemistry,” Lubno added.
As the Langley Speedway celebrated its 75th anniversary, Lubno’s achievements stand as a testament to the enduring spirit of the sport. His most cherished memory? A past victory celebrated with family, including his father, son, and grandson.
With sponsors like J&J Clearing & Demolition and support from a loyal crew, Lubno shows no signs of slowing down. “As long as I can keep crawling through that window, I’m going to keep doing it,” he said, reflecting his unwavering commitment to racing.
