Penn State’s Terry Smith Preps for Pinstripe Bowl Amid Major Changes

UPDATE: With less than 10 days until the Pinstripe Bowl, interim head coach Terry Smith is navigating a rapidly changing landscape at Penn State. Smith described the current environment as “different and unorthodox,” with significant staff and player transitions underway. “We have new staff members coming in,” he stated, emphasizing his role in unifying the team as they prepare to face the Clemson Tigers on December 27, 2023, at noon (TV-ABC) at Yankee Stadium.

The Nittany Lions are in a state of flux following the recent hiring of Matt Campbell as head coach. Smith, who has been the longest-serving member of the previous coaching staff under James Franklin, will join Campbell’s team in an unspecified capacity. Alongside Smith, eight other full-time assistants from Franklin’s staff will coach against Clemson, including offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki and defensive coordinator Anthony Poindexter.

Significantly, the team’s roster is also impacted. 27 players on Clemson’s side are ruled out due to injuries and opt-outs. On Penn State’s end, standout players such as running back Nick Singleton and guard Vega Ioane have opted out, with Singleton still planning to travel with the team. Smith is preparing younger players for increased roles, stating, “I anticipate all of those guys getting a shot to carry the ball.”

The uncertainty surrounding player availability continues. Seniors, including running back Kaytron Allen and several key offensive and defensive linemen, may opt out in the coming days, which could further alter the team’s dynamic. Smith remains focused on assembling a committed squad for the Pinstripe Bowl.

“I told them, ‘You’re either in or you’re out,’” Smith said, reinforcing his commitment to winning. The team has held meetings to ensure everyone is aligned and focused on the upcoming game.

As the situation develops, Smith acknowledges the challenge of balancing veteran playing time with the need to protect their futures ahead of the NFL scouting combine. “Each kid is a case-by-case basis,” he explained, highlighting the dual objectives of team success and individual safety.

The urgency is palpable as Penn State gears up for a crucial showdown against Clemson, with Smith and the coaching staff prepared to lead the team through this transition. All eyes will be on December 27 as Penn State aims for victory in the Pinstripe Bowl amidst a backdrop of significant change.
