In an exclusive interview, Phil opened up about his experiences that have shaped his career and his approach to live performances.
Phil X, who has been with Bon Jovi since 2013, was once the go-to session musician, collaborating with countless artists. He says, “If you’re doing your job, you’re having a blast doing your job, it’s the best.” This excitement is palpable as he prepares for upcoming performances, making his stories all the more compelling.
During a recent rehearsal break, Phil discussed his memorable session with Chris Cornell for the track “Long Gone (Rock Version).” He recalled, “I walked in, and Chris asked, ‘What are you thinking for the solo?’” Phil’s innovative approach, including a unique technique he calls “bouzouki tuning,” wowed Cornell and the entire studio. “I broke the ice with Chris Cornell!” he laughed, showcasing his ability to connect even with rock legends.
Phil’s experience with Orianthi was equally illuminating. After being recommended by producer Howard Benson, he joined her in the studio. “She got all nervous,” he revealed, “but by the end of the record, she had no problems.” Their chemistry on stage has led to electrifying performances, including a duet on “Livin’ on a Prayer.”
The guitarist also shared a remarkable story about working with Alice Cooper. In a session for the album “Brutal Planet,” Phil impressed producer Bob Marlette, who later doubled his pay. “Why doesn’t everybody do that?” Phil joked, highlighting his unique blend of talent and humor.
Despite his role in Bon Jovi, Phil maintains a friendly relationship with former member Richie Sambora. They recently performed together at a fundraiser in Los Angeles, surprising fans with their camaraderie. “Yeah… and we’re adults,” Phil remarked, dispelling any notion of rivalry.
In a nostalgic turn, Phil recounted his recent collaboration with Rik Emmett of Triumph. The two joined forces for a performance at an NHL playoff game in Edmonton, reigniting their musical connection. “The crowd went nuts,” he said, reflecting on the positive response from fans.
