Runners Gear Up for 62-Mile Murphy’s 100K on March 14

UPDATE: A growing number of runners are preparing to take on an impressive 62-mile challenge across Humboldt County as part of the first-ever Murphy’s 100K on March 14. The event, organized by local ultrarunner Pete Ciotti, aims to support businesses and residents impacted by the devastating fire on January 2.

Participants will start at the Murphy’s in Trinidad, running a scenic route that includes Clam Beach and the Hammond Coast Trail, before making their way to the Arcata Westwood Murphy’s. Runners will then head out to Glendale, return to Arcata, and finish at the Sunny Brae location, completing the full 100K.

“This is not just a race; it’s an opportunity to give back to our community,” Ciotti stated. The event has already attracted around 15 participants since it was announced yesterday, with some forming relay teams to tackle the distance together.

There is no registration fee for the race, but Ciotti encourages runners to donate to the relief efforts through the Arcata Chamber of Commerce. Murphy’s grocery stores are also stepping up, asking customers to round up their purchase totals in support of the fire victims during the week leading up to the race.

Ciotti, who previously organized a cycling event on the same route, emphasized that this footrace would bring the community together. “It’s a great way to get everyone moving and see all the cool spots around the area,” he said, highlighting the beauty of the Bay Trail and other local attractions.

Aid stations will be set up at each Murphy’s location to support the runners throughout the race. Ciotti expressed excitement about the event, noting that it would provide a chance for runners to enjoy fresh air, meet new friends, and promote health and wellness within the community.
