Samuel Bennett Johnson, II Passes Away at 82, Leaving Legacy of Love

UPDATE: Samuel Bennett Johnson, II, a beloved figure from Capitola, CA, has passed away at the age of 82 due to complications from Cerebral Amyloid Angiopathy. His family announced the news today, expressing profound sadness at the loss of a man who always claimed, “Never better!” in response to life’s simplest inquiries.

This urgent update comes as friends and family reflect on the remarkable life Sam led, filled with love, adventure, and a deep appreciation for the ocean. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Ann, who he cherished for over 58 years, along with three children and seven grandchildren. The family’s heartfelt message highlights Sam’s indelible spirit that will continue to live on in those who knew him.

Born in 1942 on Coronado Island, San Diego, Sam was a self-proclaimed “beach bum” who thrived in the sun and surf. His love for the ocean was evident as he spent countless hours spearfishing, body surfing, and sailing at local beaches. In 1960, his journey took him to Wisconsin for higher education at UW Madison, where he met Mary Ann, eventually marrying her in 1967.

The couple raised their family in Wauwatosa, WI, but Sam’s heart remained in California. In 1981, he brought his family back to the Golden State to work at Sandia National Laboratories in Livermore, CA, retiring at 62 and finally settling in Capitola.

In retirement, Sam returned to his beach roots, enjoying life above New Brighton Beach. He and Mary Ann created lasting memories with their children and grandchildren through camping trips and beach outings. Their active lifestyle included rowing with the Santa Cruz Rowing Club, where Sam contributed by teaching others how to rig and repair boats.

Sam’s passion extended beyond the water; he was also an engineer at heart, spending time in his garage workshop, where he loved fixing things and indulging in his fondness for jazz, craft beer, and California sunshine.

The family wishes to extend their sincere gratitude to Santa Cruz Hospice for their compassionate care during Sam’s final days. They encourage those wishing to honor Sam’s memory to consider making a donation to Hospice in lieu of flowers.

As the community mourns this loss, Sam’s legacy of kindness and joy will not be forgotten. His spirit will continue to inspire those who had the privilege of knowing him, reminding us all to embrace each day with enthusiasm.
