Santa Clarita’s Tree Lighting Ceremony at The Cube Sparks Joy

UPDATE: The city of Santa Clarita celebrated the holiday season with a dazzling tree lighting ceremony at The Cube Ice and Entertainment Center on December 5, 2025. Mayor Bill Miranda kicked off the festivities by using a hockey stick to send a glowing puck across the ice, igniting a magnificent Christmas tree that illuminated the rink, delighting the crowd.

As the countdown echoed—“3 … 2 … 1!”—the puck glided into the goal, marking a triumphant moment for the community. This annual event, now in its fifth year, combines holiday spirit with a celebration of The Cube, which has become a vital hub for local and regional activities since its acquisition by the city for $14.95 million.

Miranda expressed relief and joy, stating, “I didn’t think they would turn off the lights!” His excitement reflected the community’s commitment to keep this beloved ice facility operational after it faced closure in March 2020. Local advocates rallied to “Save the Rink,” leading to its purchase when it was found to be the second most utilized venue in the valley.

The Cube now serves as home to various organizations, including the UCLA Men’s Hockey Team and the Flyers youth hockey club. It also hosts special programs, such as SNAP Sports, which supports individuals with special needs. “It’s a full house here today,” Miranda noted, emphasizing the facility’s importance to the community.

Attendees were treated to performances from local figure skaters and special guests, including the Los Angeles Kings mascot, Bailey the Lion, and former NHL player Daryl Evans, who served as the master of ceremonies. The ceremony featured an excerpt from “A Nutcracker Fantasy,” previewing the upcoming holiday ice skating show, set to premiere at The Cube.

Miranda praised the skaters, stating, “These skaters pour a lot of work and energy into getting good at their skill sets.” The city plans to further improve The Cube, with upgrades like a new Zamboni already in the works.

As families laced up their skates, the atmosphere was filled with joy and laughter, with many taking their first spins on the ice. Mayor Miranda took a moment to thank the staff and volunteers who made the event possible, reflecting on the significance of the community coming together to celebrate this cherished venue.

The Cube has transformed from a potential closure to a vibrant gathering place, showcasing the community’s resilience and dedication to providing recreational opportunities for all ages. With plans for future enhancements, the excitement surrounding The Cube continues to grow, marking it as a destination for both locals and visitors alike.
