BREAKING: Sheriff Tony Helms of Geneva County, Alabama, has officially announced his retirement, effective January 2027. Helms, who has served as Sheriff since 2015, will not seek reelection for a fourth term in the upcoming 2026 elections.

In an open letter to the community, Helms, now 66 years old, expressed a desire to spend more time with his family after decades of service. “During my career, I have sacrificed time from my family,” he stated, reflecting on missed family events like ball games and birthdays. “It’s now time to try and make that up to my family.”

Helms began his law enforcement career in 1981 with the Slocomb Police Department before joining the Geneva County Sheriff’s Office in 1986. He held various positions, including Commander of the Geneva County Drug Task Force and Chief Deputy, before being elected Sheriff.

The announcement comes as a surprise to many, as Helms received overwhelming support from the community to remain in his position. However, he feels it is time for a new chapter. “I know you will choose the most qualified candidate that will protect and serve God and all the citizens of the county,” he added.

Residents of Geneva County will have until January 2027 to prepare for the transition, with ample time to consider who will fill the pivotal role of Sheriff. Helms assured the community that he will continue to serve diligently until his successor is sworn in.

This retirement marks the end of an era for Geneva County law enforcement, as Helms has been a steadfast presence in the community for decades. As citizens reflect on his contributions, discussions about potential candidates for the upcoming election will intensify.

Stay tuned for updates on this developing story and the upcoming election, as Geneva County prepares for a significant leadership transition.
