Solano County Celebrates 25 Years of Literacy with Inspiring Luncheon

UPDATE: The 25th Annual Solano County Authors Luncheon took place Sunday, bringing together authors, readers, and community leaders to celebrate literacy and raise funds for vital programs. Hosted by the Solano Library Foundation, this milestone event showcased inspiring stories and emotional messages that resonate deeply with the community.

Guests enjoyed sparkling mimosas and a catered lunch as they mingled and browsed auction tables filled with exciting items. The atmosphere buzzed with energy, highlighting the importance of literacy initiatives across Solano County. Foundation Board President Ravi Shakar welcomed attendees, emphasizing the luncheon as the foundation’s premier event that fuels literacy programs for all ages.

In a heartfelt keynote address, Mychal Threets, former Solano County librarian and current host of the rebooted Reading Rainbow series, captivated the crowd. Threets received a standing ovation after sharing from his recently released picture book, I’m So Happy You’re Here: A Celebration of Library Joy. He read aloud, stating, “The library is for you — a place you will always belong.”

Threets’ speech took a poignant turn as he revealed his personal struggles with depression just two years prior, during his last appearance at the luncheon. He recounted that he had contemplated suicide after leaving the library in December 2023. “I was dying two years ago,” he reflected. “I was in a dark place and didn’t want to be alive. I’ll never fully know why I’m still here, but I am happy to be alive — and to be here with you.” His message of resilience resonated deeply, earning him a powerful response from the audience.

The event also featured Dr. Jeff Gaborko, a pediatrician with Kaiser Permanente, who underscored the significance of reading in fostering healthy development. He urged parents to introduce their children to books early, noting, “One of the most consistent traits among healthy adults is having a high school diploma. Literacy is key to that success — and it starts with reading together at home.”

Several authors showcased their works at the luncheon, including local talents such as Dr. Genea S. Brice, Vallejo’s first Poet Laureate; Dr. June Gillam, an award-winning crime fiction writer; and Dr. Gary Matsumura, who shared insights from his memoir, Adventures in Obstetrics.

As the event concluded, Shakar reminded attendees of the critical importance of supporting literacy programs, especially in today’s climate. “These programs make a difference in the lives of adults and children in Solano County every day, which is especially important now more than ever,” he stated.

This year’s luncheon not only celebrated a quarter-century of dedication to literacy but also highlighted the ongoing challenges and triumphs within the community. With such inspiring stories and calls to action, the Solano County Authors Luncheon continues to serve as a beacon of hope and support for literacy in the region.
