UPDATE: The Pittsburgh Steelers have confirmed that rookie quarterback Will Howard will remain inactive for Week 8 against the Green Bay Packers. Despite recently opening his practice window, Howard is set to miss yet another game due to his ongoing recovery from a broken bone in his throwing hand.

Howard, a sixth-round draft pick, rejoined practice earlier this week for the first time since his injury during training camp. His absence has already extended through the preseason and the start of the regular season. While the Steelers released quarterback Logan Woodside from their practice squad, hinting at Howard’s potential return for the latter part of the season, the team is not ready to activate him just yet.

“It’s been like having another quality control around the building. Call him Coach Will. Now he’s back to being player Will,” Arthur Smith, the offensive coordinator, remarked regarding Howard’s contributions during his time on Injured Reserve. Howard expressed his excitement about being back on the field, saying, “It was like all that joy of being a little kid playing football again came back.”

The Steelers have a 21-day window to activate Howard after opening his practice window. If they choose not to activate him within this timeframe, he will be shut down for the remainder of the season. The decision to delay his activation could be strategic, allowing the team to assess other injuries among their players. Currently, the Steelers have seven designated return spots available, with players like Malik Harrison and Donte Kent already on IR.

As the Steelers prepare for their matchup against the Packers on October 29, 2023, the team faces critical decisions regarding their roster and injury management. Fans are eager to see if Howard will take the field later this season, especially as they navigate the challenges of injuries and performance.

Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops and the Steelers weigh their options for activating Will Howard.
