Thousands of Orthodox Jews Protest Military Conscription in NYC
UPDATE: A massive protest erupted in Midtown Manhattan on October 15, 2023, as over 10,000 Orthodox Jewish demonstrators clashed with police over forced military conscription in Israel. The demonstration, organized by the Central Rabbinical Congress, transformed into chaos as protesters flooded into the streets near the Israeli consulate at 800 2nd Ave.
The rally began earlier in the afternoon, attracting thousands who voiced their grievances against what they describe as mistreatment of Orthodox Jews by Israeli authorities. As evening fell, tensions escalated dramatically, with NYPD officers struggling to contain the crowd, which spilled onto roadways and snarled traffic.
Protesters, including children and seniors, expressed outrage over Israel’s policies, claiming they face persecution instead of protection.
“Americans are unaware of Israel’s horrific treatment of Orthodox Jews,”
said Rabbi Issac Green. He emphasized that Orthodox Jews should not be compelled to join a military that opposes their religious beliefs.
As the crowd grew, police attempted to regain control, using metal barricades and megaphones to direct demonstrators back to the sidewalks. However, many protesters ignored commands, resulting in shoving matches and further clashes with officers. The chaotic scene saw some police officers caught between the throngs of protesters as they pushed back against the surge.
Despite the escalating tensions, sources from the NYPD confirm that no arrests were made during the confrontations. The situation remains fluid, and authorities are expected to maintain a presence as the protest continues.
This demonstration reflects ongoing tensions regarding military service requirements for Orthodox Jews in Israel, a topic that has garnered significant attention both domestically and internationally. The protests aim to elevate awareness of these issues and challenge perceptions surrounding the treatment of religious communities in Israel.
As night descended on the city, the rally showed no signs of diminishing, with more individuals joining the cause. Observers are urged to stay informed as developments unfold in this urgent and complex situation.
