Two Hikers Rescued from Mount Rose as Conditions Deteriorate

URGENT UPDATE: Two hikers were rescued from the treacherous trails of Mount Rose on November 2, 2023, as officials warn of rapidly changing conditions in the backcountry. The North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District (NLTFPD) responded to two separate incidents, highlighting the dangerous weather that backcountry users face this time of year.

Earlier in the day, NLTFPD units were dispatched to the Ophir Creek drainage where they provided medical assistance to an injured hiker. Collaborative efforts from the NLTFPD and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue successfully extracted the individual from the rugged terrain and transported them to a local hospital for further care.

Later that evening, another call came in from the Mount Rose Summit Trail for a distressed hiker. NLTFPD crews quickly responded, assisting the individual back to their vehicle without any further incidents.

In a statement, the NLTFPD emphasized the importance of caution, stating, “Trail conditions are changing rapidly, with snow and ice now present in many areas.” They urged all backcountry users to wear proper footwear and carry essential gear to navigate the unpredictable conditions safely.

The incidents serve as a critical reminder of the inherent risks associated with hiking during this season. With snowfall and icy paths emerging, outdoor enthusiasts are being urged to stay vigilant.

As conditions continue to evolve, authorities are monitoring the situation closely. Hikers planning to explore the area are encouraged to keep updated on weather forecasts and trail conditions to ensure their safety.
