Ulster County Confirms CJ Rioux as New Finance Commissioner
UPDATE: The Ulster County Legislature has just confirmed CJ Rioux as the new commissioner of finance, marking a significant leadership change in the county’s financial administration. Legislators approved his appointment unanimously during a meeting held on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, with no discussion.
Rioux, a seasoned financial expert and former deputy finance commissioner, is stepping back into a role he previously held for nearly nine years. He replaces Max Cordella, who served as interim commissioner after Roseann Daw departed in July 2023. This transition is critical as the county navigates financial challenges and seeks stability in its fiscal policies.
With nearly two decades of experience in public finance and accounting, Rioux will be compensated at $167,463 annually, according to a county official. His recent position as assistant vice president for administration/controller at SUNY New Paltz involved overseeing crucial departments such as accounting services and purchasing.
During his time at SUNY Ulster, Rioux held multiple leadership roles, including dean for administration and acting vice president for administrative services. His extensive background includes managing budget development, capital projects, and labor negotiations, proving his capability to handle the complexities of county finance.
From 2012 to 2021, Rioux was instrumental as the county’s deputy finance commissioner, where he managed financial reporting and supervised a team of over 25 employees. He also served as acting commissioner during his tenure, gaining valuable insights into the county’s financial landscape.
Rioux began his career in public accounting at Sedore & Company, CPA’s, PC, specializing in municipal and nonprofit auditing. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and an MBA in public accountancy from SUNY New Paltz, positioning him well for the challenges ahead.
As Ulster County transitions to new financial leadership, stakeholders are eager to see Rioux’s impact on fiscal policy and financial management. The community is watching closely as he takes on this pivotal role, ensuring the county’s financial health and accountability.
