BREAKING: Three Omaha police officers have been injured and a suspect has been killed following a dramatic exchange of gunfire at a gas station on September 27, 2023. The incident unfolded after the suspect, a man in his 20s, allegedly shot a 61-year-old man multiple times at a grocery store just before noon.
Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer confirmed that officers tracked the suspect’s vehicle using a license plate obtained from the grocery store scene. Upon arriving at the gas station, officers observed the suspect exiting his car and entering a restroom. As backup arrived, officers attempted to apprehend the suspect, who emerged from the restroom firing his weapon.
In the initial exchange, one officer was shot, forcing the suspect to retreat back inside. A bystander who was in the restroom during the chaos managed to escape unharmed. Officers regrouped and once again ordered the suspect to surrender, leading to a second shootout where a second officer was shot and a third was injured by shrapnel.
Omaha police reported that the officers sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital. The officer injured by shrapnel has since been released, while the initial victim from the grocery store remains in critical condition.
“This is a very dangerous day involving this suspect in the city of Omaha,” Chief Schmaderer stated in a press briefing. The situation is still developing, and authorities are urging the public to stay informed as investigations continue.
