Urgent Arrest: Man with Gun Threatens Atlanta Airport, Averted Tragedy
UPDATE: A potential tragedy was averted at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport when authorities arrested Billy Cagle, 49, after he threatened to “shoot up” the terminal on the morning of October 20, 2025. Cagle, who was reportedly in a mental health crisis, arrived at the airport armed with a semi-automatic weapon.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that Cagle’s family alerted the Cartersville Police, who quickly contacted the Atlanta Police Department. Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum stated, “We did have a tragedy averted today,” highlighting the critical role of the family’s timely report.
Video footage captured Cagle entering the busy airport, where officers were positioned and ready to intervene. His weapon, along with 27 rounds of ammunition, was discovered in his flatbed truck parked nearby.
“Twenty-seven or more lives could have been lost today,” Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens remarked at a press conference, emphasizing the gravity of the situation as Cagle drove from Bartow County towards the airport.
The swift response of law enforcement prevented what could have been a devastating incident at one of the world’s busiest airports. This alarming event raises serious concerns about mental health crises and public safety in crowded spaces.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Cagle’s actions. As the community reflects on this incident, officials stress the importance of mental health awareness and intervention.
