UPDATE: Seattle is bracing for intense winds this Christmas Eve, with gusts already exceeding 60 mph in the Cascades. Meteorologists warn that the worst is yet to come, as additional powerful gusts are expected to sweep through the region throughout the day.
This morning, the strongest winds are concentrated over the Cascade gaps, particularly around North Bend and Enumclaw. Residents in the area have reported wind speeds reaching over 60 mph at Crystal Mountain and throughout the South Cascades. By this afternoon, winds are anticipated to shift, with gusts potentially hitting 35-45 mph across Seattle and nearby communities, and some areas could see gusts surpassing 50 mph.
Authorities are taking action as widespread Wind Advisories are in effect across the region. The High Wind Warning that previously covered much of the I-5 corridor has been canceled and downgraded, but officials caution that tree damage and power outages are likely.
The storm’s path remains uncertain, with weather models presenting conflicting forecasts. If the low-pressure system remains over the coast, damaging winds are likely; however, if it shifts eastward, the winds may diminish. Meteorologist Abby Acone advises residents to prepare for the worst-case scenario, stating, “Be ready for potential chaos, but you might be pleasantly surprised if conditions are calmer.”
Currently, the threat of river flooding has passed, except for the Skokomish River in Mason County. While river flooding risks have decreased significantly for next week, minor coastal flooding is still possible, with a Coastal Flood Advisory in effect until noon today. Isolated parking lots and roads may experience flooding during high tide.
With minor mountain snow expected in the coming days, drier weather is forecasted by Saturday afternoon. However, the focus remains on the immediate impact of today’s winds.
