Urgent Update: 84-Year-Old Nancy Guthrie Still Missing After 6 Weeks

UPDATE: The search for Nancy Guthrie, the missing 84-year-old mother of TODAY show anchor Savannah Guthrie, has entered its sixth week, with authorities confirming it remains an active and “targeted” investigation. Despite a massive multi-agency effort and a staggering $1 million reward offered by the family, the circumstances surrounding her February 1, 2026 abduction continue to puzzle investigators and the public.

Guthrie was last seen on the evening of January 31, after dining with her daughter and son-in-law in their home located in the Catalina Foothills area of Tucson. The timeline of events surrounding her disappearance is both alarming and perplexing.

According to the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, surveillance footage captured a dark figure approaching Guthrie’s home shortly after her doorbell camera was disabled at 1:47 a.m. on February 1. At 2:28 a.m., her pacemaker, synced to a Bluetooth monitoring app on her phone, lost signal, which investigators believe marks the likely time of her abduction.

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has stated that investigators are working under the belief that Guthrie was specifically targeted. While he has not disclosed further details regarding a motive, he confirmed that authorities have held “strong beliefs about what happened” since the investigation began.

Speculations range from a botched burglary to a premeditated kidnapping for ransom, as multiple ransom notes demanding millions in cryptocurrency have surfaced. However, none have been verified as authentic by law enforcement.

The investigation has taken a technological turn as federal agents canvass the neighborhood, questioning residents about any internet disruptions on the night of the disappearance. Some neighbors reported that nearby security cameras were “not available” during the critical timeframe, leading to concerns that sophisticated jamming technology might have been employed. Yet, forensic experts are divided on this theory, with some arguing that the released footage does not show signs of jamming.

The past 40-plus days have been a harrowing experience for the Guthrie family, marked by uncertainty and anxiety. Savannah Guthrie has used her platform to advocate for her mother’s safe return, including the announcement of the $1 million reward for information and a $500,000 donation to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children.

“We are blowing on the embers of hope,”

Savannah stated in a recent appeal, even as the family has faced the painful possibility that her mother may no longer be alive.

Despite the lack of an arrest, the investigation continues at full capacity. Agents have interviewed numerous individuals, processed unidentified DNA from the scene, and deployed drone technology to search the Catalina Foothills. The FBI describes the suspect as a male, approximately 5’9″ to 5’10” tall, with an average build, who was last seen carrying a black “Ozark Trail” hiking backpack.

Authorities are urging anyone with information—no matter how small—to contact the FBI or local law enforcement. As the investigation approaches the two-month mark, the focus remains on identifying the individual or individuals responsible for this calculated and malicious act.
