BREAKING NEWS: The Whitman County Genealogical Society and the Whitman County Historical Society have found a new home in Pullman, marking a significant moment for local history enthusiasts. The two nonprofits invite the public to explore their new shared space at the Community Congregational United Church of Christ, located at 525 NE Campus Ave., during an open house from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. this Sunday.
This urgent news comes as both organizations were recently displaced following the abrupt closure of the Gladish Community and Cultural Center in September 2023. Just two weeks to relocate, the societies have quickly adapted, showcasing their commitment to preserving the region’s history.
Monica Peters, correspondence secretary at the Genealogical Society, emphasizes the critical role they play in uncovering family histories that online resources cannot provide. “We fill in the gaps of people’s family history with written records and accounts,” she stated.
Meanwhile, Alex Otero, archivist at the Historical Society, highlights the importance of their tangible collections. “We provide a broader focus on the ‘where’ and ‘what’ aspects, keeping the artifacts and mementos of the region’s past in one place,” Otero explained.
The societies, which share resources despite being separate entities, are open to the public on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to noon, or by appointment. The Historical Society currently offers free research assistance, while the Genealogical Society charges $20 per hour for genealogical services.
This relocation signifies a new chapter for both organizations, which have rich histories themselves. The Historical Society was founded in 1972, transitioning to the Gladish in 1987. The Genealogical Society began in 1984 and moved into the Gladish in 1992 after accumulating significant records.
Peters notes a growing interest in family heritage among residents. “People want to know more than just a name; they want a connection to their ancestry and community,” she stated, underscoring the emotional impact of their work.
With their new location, the societies are poised to continue enriching the community’s understanding of its history, offering access to century-old publications, maps, and photographs of the Pullman area.
