Windows 10 Market Share Plummets as Users Switch to Windows 11

UPDATE: As of October 14, 2025, the market share of Windows 10 among gamers has plunged to new lows following the end of official support. With an increasing number of users transitioning to Windows 11, the impact on the gaming community is immediate and significant.

According to the latest Steam Hardware & Software Survey released by Valve, Windows 11 now commands a dominating 63.57% of all Steam users—an increase of 3.18 percentage points in just one month. In stark contrast, Windows 10 has dropped to 31.14%, losing 3.94 percentage points and indicating a notable shift in gamer preferences.

Despite this decline, a small fraction—0.09%—of Steam users continue to cling to what many consider the best Windows version ever released. However, as Windows 10 faces growing challenges, including issues accessing certain features, the urgency to adapt is palpable.

Overall, Windows continues to dominate the Steam platform with an overwhelming 94.84% market share, although it represents a slight decline of 0.75 points. Following far behind, Linux holds 3.05%, while macOS accounts for 2.11% of users.

The survey also highlights shifts in hardware preferences, with the Nvidia RTX 3060 retaining its status as the most popular graphics card on Steam, holding a 4.3% market share. The RTX 4060 for laptops follows closely at 4.1%, while the RTX 3050 rounds out the top three with a 2.96% share.

As the gaming landscape evolves, users are urged to consider their options and make timely decisions regarding their operating systems. The transition from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is becoming critical not just for performance enhancements but also for ongoing support and functionality.

With the trend towards Windows 11 expected to accelerate, gamers should stay informed about developments. The next survey will provide further insights into how these changes are reshaping the gaming environment.
