Driver Dies Following Collision with Box Truck in El Cajon

A tragic accident occurred on March 28, 2024, in El Cajon, California, where a driver lost his life after colliding with a box truck. The incident took place around 15:25 near the intersection of Broadway and Oro Street, according to a news release from the El Cajon Police Department.

When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the box truck overturned on its side. Witnesses reported that the truck had briefly caught fire after the crash. The driver of the black BMW, identified as 19-year-old Jesse Hernandez from El Cajon, was found trapped inside the mangled vehicle. Emergency responders extricated him from the wreckage, and he was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigation Details

Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision. According to Lt. Joe Crawford of the El Cajon Police Department, excessive speed appears to be a contributing factor. Witnesses indicated that the BMW may have been engaged in a speed contest with another vehicle just prior to the crash.
