Falcons Retain Jeff Ulbrich as Defensive Coordinator Under Stefanski

The Atlanta Falcons have announced the retention of defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich on the staff of new head coach Kevin Stefanski. This decision was made just two days after Stefanski was appointed as the successor to Raheem Morris, who was let go following a disappointing 8-9 season.

Owner Arthur Blank expressed his support for Ulbrich, stating that while he would recommend the new coach keep the defensive coordinator, it was ultimately a decision for the incoming head coach to make. The Falcons’ defense showed notable improvement last season, particularly in the pass rush, which was bolstered by rookie first-round picks James Pearce Jr. and Jalon Walker, along with second-year player Brandon Dorlus.

In his inaugural season as defensive coordinator, Ulbrich’s leadership helped the Falcons achieve a franchise record of 57 sacks, a significant increase from the previous year’s total of just 31. Pearce’s impressive performance included 10.5 sacks, marking the highest total by a Falcons player since Vic Beasley recorded 15.5 sacks in 2016. The 2025 draft class also featured safety Xavier Watts, who had five interceptions, while safety Jessie Bates III was recognized as an All-Pro.

Stefanski’s hiring marks a pivotal moment for the Falcons, as it was the first major staff decision following his appointment on Saturday night, March 15, 2024. He joins the Falcons after a six-season tenure with the Cleveland Browns, where he garnered two AP Coach of the Year awards and compiled a record of 45-56. His firing on January 5, 2024, came after the Browns finished their season with a 5-12 record.

As Stefanski settles into his new role, he is expected to recruit a new offensive coordinator and special teams coach. Matt Ryan, the recently appointed president of football operations and former Falcons quarterback, led the search for Stefanski and is continuing efforts to find a new general manager.

With Ulbrich staying on board, the Falcons aim to build on the defensive successes of the past season as they prepare for upcoming challenges in the NFL.
