House Judiciary Subpoenas Jack Smith for Trump Investigations

The House Judiciary Committee has issued a subpoena to former Special Counsel Jack Smith regarding his investigations into former President Donald Trump. The committee, led by Chairman Jim Jordan, is demanding all documents and communications from Smith’s time overseeing the high-profile probes. Smith is scheduled to testify on December 17, 2025, at 10 a.m.

In a letter dated December 3, Jordan stated, “The Committee on the Judiciary is continuing to conduct oversight of the operations of the Office of Special Counsel you led — specifically your team’s prosecutions of President Donald Trump and his co-defendants.” He emphasized that Smith’s insights are crucial for the committee’s oversight efforts.

Jordan has indicated that the committee has reason to believe Smith possesses vital information pertinent to their ongoing inquiries. The subpoena includes a requirement for Smith to produce requested materials by December 12, 2025, along with the deposition.

This development coincides with a broader escalation of criticisms from Republican lawmakers regarding Smith’s investigation into Trump’s actions surrounding the 2020 presidential election. They argue that the investigation has exceeded its bounds, impacting GOP lawmakers, party organizations, and media entities.

In August 2023, Smith charged Trump with conspiracy related to efforts to overturn the election results following his loss to President Joe Biden. Prosecutors alleged that Trump and his allies spread false claims of election fraud to persuade state officials to overturn Biden’s victory and pressured then-Vice President Mike Pence to obstruct the electoral vote counting process during the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

Smith later moved to drop this case after Trump was re-elected in 2024. Additionally, in a separate prosecution initiated in June 2023, Trump faced charges for allegedly retaining classified documents he took from the White House to his residence at Mar-a-Lago after leaving office in January 2021. Subsequent charges were filed against Trump for allegedly showing classified military plans to visitors at his golf club in New Jersey.

As the political landscape evolves, the focus on Smith’s investigations continues to draw significant attention. The outcomes of these legal proceedings could have lasting implications for Trump’s political future and the broader electoral landscape.
