Trump Kicks Off Construction of New White House Ballroom
Construction has commenced on a new ballroom at the White House, a project that President Donald Trump describes as long overdue. Heavy machinery has begun dismantling part of the East Wing to make way for the facility, which is expected to span 90,000 square feet and accommodate nearly 1,000 people. The estimated cost of the ballroom is $250 million, funded by private donations and contributions from Trump himself.
During a recent event celebrating the Louisiana State University baseball team, Trump highlighted the significance of the project. “We’re building a ballroom. They’ve wanted a ballroom for 150 years, and I’m giving that honor to this wonderful place,” he stated. He expressed confidence that the ballroom will be “the most beautiful ballroom in the country.”
Funding and Controversy Surrounding the Project
The funding for the ballroom includes a notable contribution from Carrier, a leading air conditioning manufacturer, which has confirmed its donation of the HVAC system for the facility. The full list of donors has not yet been disclosed.
Renovations at the White House are not uncommon. According to the White House Historical Association, each president and first lady has left their mark on the residence, often in ways that sparked criticism at the time but later became iconic. The current ballroom project represents the most significant alteration to the White House since the addition of the Truman balcony in 1948.
Trump’s renovation efforts extend beyond the ballroom. He has also transformed the Rose Garden into a patio hosting area. “You probably hear the beautiful sound of construction to the back. You hear that sound? That’s music to my ears,” he remarked, associating the sounds of construction with financial prosperity.
Political Reactions to the Ballroom Construction
Political responses to the ballroom project have been mixed, with many Democrats expressing strong opposition. California Governor Gavin Newsom criticized the president’s priorities, stating on social media, “Trump’s priorities: bulldozing the White House — reopening the government — (with a red x emoji).”
Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer previously labeled the ballroom initiative as unnecessary. In a statement made on July 31, 2023, he quipped, “He announced plans to build himself a new White House ballroom so he can eat his cheeseburgers in there in luxury. Listen, I’m happy to eat my cheeseburger at my desk; I don’t need a $200 million ballroom to eat it in.”
As construction progresses, the East Wing, which accommodates offices for the first lady and her staff, will be temporarily relocated. Images of the demolition have circulated widely online, prompting the Treasury Department to advise employees against taking unauthorized photographs without White House permission.
The ballroom construction continues to draw attention, reflecting both the ambitions of the Trump administration and the controversies surrounding federal spending priorities.
