The recent U.S. military operation that successfully captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro involved an extensive fleet of aircraft, including bombers, fighters, and surveillance drones. The mission, dubbed Operation Absolute Resolve, showcased the U.S. military’s advanced capabilities, featuring more than 150 aircraft from various branches, according to General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
In a news briefing on January 3, 2026, General Caine detailed the operation’s complexity, which included aircraft such as the F-22 Raptor, F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, and B-1 Lancer bombers. The operation also utilized remotely piloted drones, enhancing the effectiveness of the mission. Caine emphasized the significance of coordination among different military branches, stating, “This was an audacious operation that only the United States could do.”
Details of the Operation
Caine highlighted the precision required for the operation, which launched from 20 locations across land and sea. He noted that the mission involved a well-orchestrated aerial assault intended to maintain tactical surprise while securing Maduro’s capture in downtown Caracas. He remarked, “An extraction so precise… required the utmost of precision and integration within our joint force.”
As part of the operation, helicopters carrying the extraction team approached Venezuela at approximately 100 feet above sea level, while overhead aircraft provided protective cover. The U.S. forces successfully disabled several Venezuelan air defense systems, facilitating a safe passage for the helicopters. Despite coming under fire during the operation, the team managed to apprehend both Maduro and his wife.
General Caine confirmed that fighter aircraft and drones provided suppressive fire during the extraction, ensuring the safety of the team as they withdrew. He acknowledged the risks involved, stating, “Those in the air over Caracas last night were willing to give their lives for those on the ground and in the helicopters.”
Role of Stealth Technology
Although the Pentagon has not disclosed specific details about the types of drones used in the operation, videos circulating online suggest that the RQ-170 Sentinel, a stealth reconnaissance drone, played a key role. This drone, developed by Lockheed Martin‘s Advanced Development Programs, is known for its low-observable capabilities and has been utilized in various military operations.
The operation’s success was not without challenges; adverse weather conditions complicated the mission. However, conditions improved just enough to allow skilled aviators to navigate through the area effectively. As the extraction team moved into position, they encountered resistance, with one helicopter sustaining damage but remaining operational.
The RQ-170 has a notable history, having previously operated in conflict zones, including Afghanistan, where it gained the nickname the “Beast of Kandahar.” The drone’s advanced technology has also drawn attention internationally, especially after it was downed over Iranian territory in 2011.
In the aftermath of the operation, the U.S. military’s strategic use of advanced aerial technology and coordinated efforts illustrates its ongoing commitment to achieving complex military objectives. As General Caine stated, “Failure is never an option for America’s joint force.”
