Verizon Launches Affordable 5G Fixed Wireless Access Service
Verizon has introduced a new version of its 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) service, targeting budget-conscious consumers with lighter internet usage needs. Named Verizon Home Internet Lite (VHI), this service aims to provide an affordable alternative for households in areas not covered by the company’s Fios broadband network. The launch reflects Verizon’s commitment to expand internet access for users who have been limited to slower options, such as DSL or satellite connections.
VHI is specifically designed for customers with relatively low data requirements. According to a representative from Verizon, the service operates on C-Band technology when the 5G network is unavailable. Customers can access the service at a subscription cost of $25 per month when bundled with a mobile plan, or $35 as a standalone option. The service is capped at a maximum download speed of 25 Mb/s, with typical speeds ranging between 10 Mb/s and 25 Mb/s.
After the initial 15 GB of data usage within a billing cycle, VHI throttles speeds to a maximum of 10 Mb/s, allowing users unlimited data at that reduced speed for the remainder of the month. Additionally, the offering includes a complimentary router for self-installation, making it convenient for customers.
In comparison, Verizon’s standard 5G Home Internet services range from approximately $35 to $75 per month, depending on the selected plan and whether users have an existing mobile tariff. This strategic pricing allows Verizon to cater to a broader audience, especially those who may find traditional broadband services unaffordable.
The introduction of VHI is part of Verizon’s larger growth strategy in the FWA market. In the second quarter of 2023, the company added 278,000 FWA customers, bringing its total to 5.1 million subscribers. Former CEO Hans Vestberg previously stated that Verizon aims to reach between 8 million and 9 million subscribers by 2028.
Earlier in October, Verizon announced its acquisition of regional FWA provider Starry for an undisclosed sum. This move is intended to enhance Verizon’s capability to offer services in multi-dwelling units, further expanding its market presence in the FWA segment.
As the demand for reliable internet access continues to grow, Verizon’s new offering could significantly impact consumers seeking affordable and efficient broadband solutions.
