Urgent Officer-Involved Shooting in Troy Leaves Suspect Critical

UPDATE: An officer-involved shooting occurred in downtown Troy, N.Y. on October 14, 2023, shortly before 10 p.m. resulting in a critical condition for the suspect, identified as Michael Rodriguez, 41. The incident unfolded after a 911 call from a female victim who reported being chased by Rodriguez, who allegedly threatened her with a handgun.

As the Troy Police Patrol Officers responded to the emergency call, they located Rodriguez walking on the sidewalk of Ferry Street near 6th Avenue. When officers attempted to make contact, Rodriguez opened fire, striking at them without provocation. In response, both officers returned fire, seeking cover as per their training.

The situation escalated rapidly, with the female victim fleeing westbound on foot. Rodriguez attempted to escape through a nearby parking area but soon collapsed, dropping both his firearm and illegal narcotics. He was quickly apprehended by additional officers who arrived on the scene to secure his weapon and provide medical aid.

The Troy Fire Department responded promptly and transported Rodriguez to a local hospital, where he remains in critical condition. Fortunately, the two initially responding officers were evaluated at a hospital but sustained no physical injuries, as confirmed by police reports.

This incident raises significant concerns, particularly given Rodriguez’s criminal history. He is currently a parolee supervised by the NYS Department of Corrections and Community Supervision, stemming from a 2019 case involving charges of Attempted Murder and Criminal Possession of a Weapon.

Officials emphasize the importance of community safety, with Chief of Police Daniel DeWolf stating, “It is nothing short of a miracle that no other individuals, Troy Police Officers or community members, were injured by the suspect’s deadly actions tonight.” He reassured the public of the department’s commitment to supporting the involved officers.

Mayor Carmella R. Mantello echoed these sentiments, noting the danger faced by officers during what began as a routine call, stating, “Tonight’s incident is a stark reminder that at any moment, even a seemingly routine call can escalate into a critical and dangerous situation.”

The investigation is ongoing, with specialty units from the Troy Police Department collaborating with the New York State Police to gather evidence and assess the situation. Prosecutors from the Rensselaer County District Attorney’s Office are on the scene to handle any associated charges against Rodriguez.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact the Troy Police Department at (518) 270-4411. As the investigation unfolds, community members remain vigilant, reflecting on the harrowing events of the evening.
