Aftyn Behn Addresses Controversial Comments During Candidate Forum

Democratic congressional candidate Aftyn Behn recently addressed past comments that have drawn criticism during her campaign for Tennessee’s 7th district. Appearing on CNN’s “Inside Politics Sunday,” Behn defended statements made while she was a private citizen, notably her remarks about Nashville and her views on policing during the heightened racial tensions following the death of George Floyd in 2020.

When questioned by host Manu Raju about her deleted tweet asserting that “burning down a police station is justified,” Behn explained, “Yeah, I said that during the George Floyd moment when the entire country was demanding accountability and safer policing.” She emphasized the need for community investment in mental health and youth programs to address crime effectively.

Behn acknowledged that, as a lawmaker now, she has matured and would not express such sentiments publicly today. “I wouldn’t post things like that now and haven’t, because I’ve definitely matured,” she stated.

The conversation also turned to earlier remarks Behn made on the “Year Old GRITS” podcast, where she expressed disdain for elements of Nashville’s culture, including bachelorette parties and country music. “I hate the city, I hate the bachelorettes, I hate the pedal taverns,” she said, reflecting a sentiment shared by many locals.

When pressed by Raju if those comments were a mistake, Behn reiterated her status as a private citizen at the time, adding, “Nashville is my home. Do I roll my eyes at the bachelorette parties and the pedal taverns that are blocking my access to my house? Yeah, every Nashvillian does.”

In a previous op-ed published in 2019, Behn labeled Tennessee a “racist state,” stating, “Racism is in the air we breathe, permeating the State Capitol.” This statement has also contributed to the scrutiny she faces in her current campaign.

The special election for Tennessee’s 7th district is scheduled for July 4, 2025, following the resignation of Republican Representative Mark Green. Behn’s campaign focuses on addressing the economic challenges facing families in Middle Tennessee. She emphasized that the race is about “families across Middle Tennessee that are getting crushed by rising prices while Washington politicians and billionaires argue about this type of nonsense.”

As Behn seeks to connect with voters, her past comments continue to resonate, prompting discussions about accountability, community values, and the responsibilities of public officials.
