Minnesota Senator Urges Trump to Respect Somali Community

State Senator Jim Abeler (R-MN) has publicly condemned remarks made by former President Donald Trump during a Cabinet meeting, in which Trump referred to Somali immigrants as “garbage.” This statement, made on March 12, 2024, has sparked outrage and prompted Abeler to reach out to the President in a letter that highlights the contributions of the Somali community in Minnesota.

Abeler expressed surprise at Trump’s comments, which were made in the context of a fraud scandal involving allegations that 78 people, predominantly Somali asylum-seekers, defrauded state social service programs of over $1 billion. In his letter, Abeler stated, “The Somalis I know, and I know many, are nothing of the sort. They are businesspeople, drivers, hourly workers supporting their families, investors, nurses, students, and clerics – just like how my ancestors turned out.”

Trump’s comments have drawn significant criticism from various quarters, including Tim Walz, Minnesota’s Democratic governor, who also denounced the remarks. During the Cabinet meeting, Trump said, “We could go one way or the other, and we’re going to go the wrong way if we keep taking in garbage into our country.” The former President specifically targeted Ilhan Omar, a prominent Somali-American politician, stating, “She’s garbage. Her friends are garbage. These people aren’t people who work.”

In response, Abeler pointed out the positive impact that Somali immigrants have had on Minnesota. Many came to the United States fleeing civil war and have since contributed to society by starting businesses, raising families, and participating actively in their communities. He emphasized the importance of recognizing the dignity of every individual, writing, “No man, woman, or child is more or less in the eyes of our Lord God Most High, and none of them are trash.”

Abeler extended an invitation to Trump, suggesting that the President meet with members of the Somali community to better understand their experiences and contributions. “Please join me and several dozen Somali men and women for an hour or two to see for yourself how fortunate we are to have them in our midst,” he wrote.

The controversy surrounding Trump’s comments and Abeler’s response underscores ongoing tensions regarding immigration and community dynamics in the United States, particularly in states with significant immigrant populations like Minnesota. As the dialogue continues, many are calling for a more respectful and nuanced discussion about the contributions of immigrant communities to American society.

This incident reflects broader issues related to immigration policy and community integration, raising questions about the narratives surrounding immigrants in the United States. As reactions unfold, the focus remains on fostering understanding and respect among diverse communities.
