Fargo Officials Urge Homeowners to Avoid Illegal Snow Dumping

URGENT UPDATE: As winter storms loom, Fargo officials are urgently reminding homeowners to refrain from illegal snow dumping, which poses serious hazards on local roadways. With more snow expected later this week, residents must understand that pushing snow into the street can lead to fines up to $500 and create dangerous driving conditions.

Authorities confirm that it is illegal in North Dakota to move snow onto public rights-of-way, a practice that can lead to severe consequences, including collisions. Barry Kinnischtzke, operations section team leader for the North Dakota Department of Transportation, stated, “If it’s not clear, that’s going to lead to those issues.”

Snow accumulation in the streets not only disrupts traffic flow but can also impede emergency responders. Kinnischtzke warned that large snow piles can obstruct sight lines at intersections and lead to additional drifting on roadways, creating even more hazardous conditions. “If we have a long winter, that can definitely lead to more issues on those rural roadways,” he added.

Walsh County officials are alerting landowners that they could face financial liability if their snow piles result in accidents. The city of Fargo is actively working to keep roadways safe and accessible, with Public Works Director Ben Dow reiterating the importance of not piling snow at the end of driveways. “We’re just trying to do what’s best for the rest of the traveling public,” Dow stressed.

With the winter season only beginning, the potential for additional snowfall raises the stakes for residents. Officials are urging immediate compliance with snow management guidelines to avoid costly fines and ensure public safety.
