UPDATE: A tragic four-vehicle crash on Interstate 25 near Loveland has claimed the life of 17-month-old Elijah Manley, confirmed the Larimer County Coroner’s Office this morning. The accident occurred on Tuesday, and details are emerging that highlight the devastating impact on Elijah’s family.
The collision involved a box truck, a Lexus GX, a Kia Telluride, and a Chevrolet Silverado, resulting in injuries to another juvenile and two adults in the Lexus. Elijah was pronounced dead at the scene, according to an official statement from the coroner’s office.
Investigators from the Colorado State Patrol report that the crash stemmed from an earlier incident wherein a vehicle was forced to the side of the road due to a medical emergency. This created a chain reaction that led to the tragic outcome.
Jose Salazar, the 35-year-old driver of the box truck, now faces a slew of serious charges, including child abuse, vehicular homicide while driving under the influence, and vehicular assault. According to the Colorado State Patrol, Salazar swerved from the center lane, colliding with the Lexus and pushing it into the other vehicles.
Salazar is scheduled to appear in the 8th Judicial District Court in Fort Collins at 8:30 a.m. on December 29, 2023.
The community is rallying around Elijah’s family during this painful time. A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support them as they navigate the loss of their child and cope with financial burdens from missed work and unforeseen expenses. The fundraiser poignantly states, “No words can fully capture the heartbreak of losing a child in a tragic car accident, and this family is now walking through an unimaginable season of grief.”
This incident has resonated deeply with the local community, highlighting the urgent need for road safety awareness. As the investigation continues, officials are urging drivers to remain vigilant and cautious, particularly in high-traffic areas.
