Tremonton Couple Acts Heroically After Fatal Shooting of Officers

On a summer night in August 2023, tragedy struck in Tremonton, Utah, when two police officers were shot and killed during a violent incident. This harrowing event became a catalyst for an extraordinary display of courage and compassion by local residents, Sterling and Courtney Johnston. Their quick actions not only helped save lives but also highlighted the strength of their close-knit community.

The Johnston family, who moved to Tremonton to raise their three children, found themselves at the center of an unfolding crisis. As their children played sports just a few blocks from home, they received a phone call that would change everything. “He told me that he heard gunshots,” said Courtney Johnston. “So, I pretty much signaled to him, like, you need to get in the car and go.”

Sterling Johnston rushed toward the sports field, unaware of the chaos that awaited him. Upon arrival, he was confronted with the sight of police lights flashing and officers on the ground. Tragically, two Tremonton police officers, Officer Eric Estrada and Sergeant Lee Sorensen, had been shot. Additionally, a Box Elder County Sheriff’s deputy, Mike Allred, along with his K-9 partner, Azula, had also sustained injuries in the incident.

Faced with the immediate danger, Sterling Johnston exhibited remarkable bravery. He witnessed a man holding a gun, who appeared distressed and was contemplating suicide. “I saw him come out of nowhere and kneel on the ground,” Johnston recalled. “He put the gun in his mouth and sat there for a second.” In that moment, he felt a sense of determination rather than fear. “I feel like God took over. I remember saying that his kids still love him, and he just kind of slumped down.”

As Sterling engaged with the man, Courtney quickly ran to the scene, calling 911. After successfully persuading the gunman to relinquish his weapon, Sterling handed the gun to Courtney. “I kind of like just panicked a little bit,” she admitted. “I was like, I was a bit hysterical. I kept apologizing to the dispatch. I was trying to speak as clear as I can.”

Their efforts did not go unnoticed. The Johnston couple is now being hailed as heroes for their intervention during a time of crisis. By taking decisive actions to alert the authorities and disarm the situation, they played a vital role in preventing further loss of life.

The community of Tremonton has responded with overwhelming support for the Johnston family, demonstrating the resilience and unity that defines their small-town spirit. “It’s an amazing community,” Sterling Johnston remarked, reflecting on the environment they chose for their family. “Like everybody greets you at the door.”

As the investigation into the incident continues, the Johntons serve as a poignant reminder of the power of human compassion. Their willingness to act in the face of danger underscores the importance of community and the impact that one family’s bravery can have on many lives.
