UPDATE: The community of Waterford, New York, mourns the loss of James Donald “Jim” Early, who passed away peacefully on December 18, 2025, at the age of 87. Known for his dedication to education and community service, Jim’s passing marks a profound loss for friends and family alike.
Born on July 3 and always celebrating on the Fourth of July, Jim was the third of five children to the late Joseph A. Early, Esq., and Loretto Powers Early. He is survived by his sister, Elizabeth M. Early, along with numerous nieces and nephews who cherished him dearly. Tragically, his daughter, Mary Ellen Early, preceded him in death earlier this year on June 26, 2025.
Jim’s legacy is shaped by his devotion to his family and community. He leaves behind four loving daughters: Grace E. Boss, Jane F. Early, Margaret H. Warner, and Kathleen L. Early, as well as nine grandchildren who will honor his memory.
A proud alumnus of St. Joseph’s High School, Jim began his journey toward the priesthood before realizing his true calling was in education. He taught English Composition at Hudson Valley Community College from 1967 until his retirement in December 1999, positively influencing countless students over his career.
In addition to his teaching career, Jim served as the Sole Assessor for the Town and Village of Waterford for a decade and was an active member of the J. W. Ford Hose Volunteer Fire Department for over 57 years. His service to the community extended to his passion for music, where he played the pipe organ at Saint Joseph’s Parish in South Troy.
Jim’s health declined in recent years, leading to compassionate care at the Eddy Heritage House Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center in Troy. His funeral will take place on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. at the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, followed by a service at noon at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Waterford. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Friends and loved ones are invited to pay their respects at the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m.. The Early family requests that contributions be made in Jim’s memory to The Hospice Community or the Waterford Fire Department, organizations that reflect his spirit of service.
Jim’s legacy of kindness, friendship, and unwavering faith will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. To share condolences or memories, visit: www.Brendesefuneralhome.com.
