SARATOGA COUNTY, N.Y. — After a distinguished career spanning nearly five decades, including the last twelve years as sheriff, Michael Zurlo officially concluded his tenure with a walkout ceremony at the Paul E. Lent Public Safety Facility in Ballston Spa. The event attracted law enforcement officials, elected representatives, and family members, all of whom gathered to honor Zurlo’s longstanding commitment to the community.
Zurlo, who began his law enforcement career in his hometown of Mechanicville, emphasized the importance of the people he served. “I love the passion. I love the people I work with. I love the residents of Saratoga County,” he stated. Reflecting on his years in service, he remarked, “The last 12 years have been phenomenal. It’s been an honor to serve as the sheriff.”
Despite inclement weather, the ceremony was well-attended, showcasing the deep connections Zurlo fostered during his years in office. He expressed gratitude for the relationships he built, saying, “It’s just nice that we connected with a lot of people in this job.” The crowd included law enforcement from various jurisdictions, local and state officials, as well as friends and family.
During the ceremony, Zurlo’s son, Andrew, traveled from North Carolina to deliver a heartfelt tribute. He highlighted his father’s integrity, dedication, and unwavering support throughout the years. “You taught us that heroes live in quiet strength, consistency, and always putting family first,” Andrew shared, underscoring the personal sacrifices Zurlo made while serving the community.
With emotion, Zurlo acknowledged the sacrifices his family endured during his career. “I’ve missed Christmases, I really have,” he admitted, noting instances when duty called him away from family celebrations. He expressed appreciation for his wife, describing her as a “rock” in his life, and looked forward to spending more time with his family, particularly his seven-month-old granddaughter, Lily.
At the ceremony, Zurlo received several honors, including the Honorable Discharge Award, which recognizes individuals for their honorable service upon retirement. Jeff Brown, the Undersheriff and Sheriff-elect, presented the awards and praised Zurlo as “the epitome of what a county sheriff should be.”
As he addressed the audience for the final time in his official capacity, Zurlo conveyed his gratitude and pride in serving Saratoga County. “Serving this county and its people has been one of the greatest honors of my 48-year law enforcement career,” he stated. He expressed confidence in handing the reins over to Brown, saying, “I could not think of a better person to succeed me.”
Looking ahead, Zurlo expressed excitement about enjoying a well-deserved retirement. He plans to travel with his wife and spend quality time with family, while also reflecting on the impact he made during his years in office. “I can tell them I did my job 150%. I worked hard, seven days a week, 365 days a year, 24/7 to give them the best protection that they can have,” he affirmed.
As this chapter of his life concludes, the Saratogian plans to publish a comprehensive reflection on Zurlo’s career on December 24, 2023. This will provide further insights into what drew him to the department and his experiences as sheriff.
